Dr. Joe Stahlman Reveals Haudenosaunee Facts They Don’t Teach You In School

This might surprise you if you grew up in the Greater Western New York region, but our schools are the only ones in the country to teach children about the “Iroquois” Confederacy. It’s not just Western New York History. It’s American history. Oh, and why the quotes around the word “Iroquois”? Dr. Joe Stahlman of the Seneca Nation Tribal Preservation Office is this week’s guest. He begins this episode by describing what this office does and the resources it has access to. You’d be amazed at the amount of primary source materials he has at his fingertips! He also explains the difference between “Iroquois” and “Haudenosaunee” and why the people of the “Six Nations”  prefer the latter.

In the show’s second half, Stahlman continues with a quick summary of how the people of first five, then six communities formed this confederacy which all school children learn about. He also let’s us know why it was limited to six but actually incorporated more.
