Lafayette’s 1825 journey through Mendon to Canandaigua sparked myths and mysteries. Did he dine in Mendon or rush to Canandaigua’s warm welcome? Click the link below for this week’s episode of The State of Greater Western New York Report to unravel the route!
In the first half of the show, host Chris Carosa, author of the award-winning book History Unleashed: Lafayette’s Remarkable Tour of the Greater Western New York Region, debunks myths about Lafayette’s Mendon stop on June 7, 1825. No dinner at the Mendon Hotel, just a quick carriage switch, and a mistaken tale of meeting Revolutionary War veteran Timothy Barnard. Carosa explores the mystery of Lafayette’s route to Canandaigua—through Victor or Bloomfield?
In the second half, Carosa traces Lafayette’s vibrant Canandaigua arrival, greeted by the Ontario Brass Band and a massive crowd. From a diary’s vivid account to a candlelit balcony speech at the Blossom Hotel, discover how Canandaigua’s fervor honored the Revolutionary hero. Next week, the tour continues to Geneva.
