Chautauqua Updates on This Week’s State of Greater Western New York Report – February 24, 2022

If there’s anything we’ve learned over the past decade or so, it’s that the walls of journalism have come tumbling down. Nationally, we see all over the country people from every walk of life reporting news in their own way. Do you know we have people like that right here in the Greater Western New York Region? We’re going to talk to them in a moment and they’re going to tell us about some of the issues they have with popular social media platforms, as well as what they report. It’s all right here on this week’s episode of the State of Greater Western New York Report.

Karen and Roy Harvey of Mayville New York retired from their impressive journalism careers in 1999 (Karen was a print photographer and Roy word in TV, radio, and print). Very soon after, they decided to go independent and “correct some of the things we have done.” Today, their most popular effort is known as “Chautauqua Updates.” In the show’s first segment, the couple explains how they arrived at where they are at today, how they produce their show, and who some of the guests have been.

In the second half of today’s show, Karen and Roy Harvey get into the nitty-gritty of the problems they have encountered as independent journalists using well-known social media platforms and why they are at a point where they are forced to self-censor themselves. But don’t give up folks. The two veterans have discovered a couple of workarounds. While not perfect, these alternative platforms provide an uncensored venue for viewers to get the raw news.

Our guests happily answered questions from the live audience. In fact, these are probably some of the same questions you had.
