Lafayette’s 1825 arrival in Buffalo sparked a patriotic frenzy. Crowds thronged to greet the Revolutionary War hero. What made his Western New York tour unforgettable? Click below for this week’s episode of The State of Greater Western New York Report to explore this leg of Lafayette’s historic journey.
In the first half of the show, host Chris Carosa, author of an upcoming book on post-Revolutionary Western New York, recounts Lafayette’s grand arrival in Buffalo on June 4, 1825. Thousands gathered at Buffalo Harbor, celebrating both Lafayette and the newly opened Erie Canal. A memorable encounter with Seneca chief Red Jacket, complete with a toupee reveal, highlighted the region’s fervor.
In the second half, Carosa follows Lafayette’s journey through Black Rock, Niagara Falls, and Lewiston. From breakfast with Peter Porter to an awe-struck visit to Goat Island’s falls, Lafayette’s tour connected the frontier to America’s revolutionary spirit. A surprising Masonic link and tranquil tavern stay await in next week’s episode.
