Click the image below to watch this week’s episode of the State of Greater Western New York Report and discover the remarkable connection between the early settlement of our region and one of America’s most famous historic battles.
In the first half of the show, Tom Schobert, author of a new historical novel about Alamo defender John Hubbard Forsythe, shares his lifelong passion for the Alamo and details Forsythe’s early life in Avon, New York. He describes what pioneer life was like in the Genesee Country in the early 1800s, the challenges of settlement, the impact of the War of 1812 on local families, and how personal tragedy led Forsythe to leave Western New York and eventually head to Texas.
In the second half, Tom discusses his book, its upcoming launch on June 7th in Avon, key figures at the Alamo such as Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, William Travis, and Santa Anna, what the Alamo compound was really like, and a gripping account of the 13-day siege and final battle on March 6, 1836.
