Why Did So Many British Colonies Claim Greater Western New York?

The Greater Western New York Region was at one time or another claimed by no fewer than five British colonies. Why was this so? This week’s guest Christopher Carosa, Deputy Historian for the Town of Mendon, NY, after quickly reviewing the other European powers, focuses on the British colonial period. He takes us right up until just before the creation of the Province of New York.

In the show’s second half, Carosa starts by explaining how one final European power had to be dealt with before the Colony of  New York could be established. He then outlines all the competing land claims that arose once New York was chartered, and yet one more conflict that arose out of the creation of another colony. He sums up what happened through to the end of the Revolutionary War and then reveals the one land claim conflict that remained to be resolved.
