The Beaver Wars’ Impact On Greater Western New York

“Oceania was at war with Eurasia: therefore Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia. The enemy of the moment always represented absolute evil, and it followed that any past or future agreement with him was impossible.” While those words come from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984, they could have easily been applied to the pre-Columbian cultures in and around the Greater Western New York Region. With the advent of European colonization, this never-ending warfare climaxed in the 1600s and culminated in the nearly century-long Beaver Wars.
