Fascinating Wayne County History and Its Upcoming Bicentennial Celebration

The Greater Western New York Region is almost 240 years old. Many of our counties are much younger. Last year, three of them celebrated their bicentennial. Our guests this week are the Co-Chairs of the Wayne County Bicentennial Committee Gene Bavis, Walworth Town Historian, and Rosa Fox, Town of Huron Historian. In the first half of the show, both tell us of some of the remarkable history of Wayne County, from the genealogy of its towns, the significance of the Erie Canal and the “Burned-Over District,” as well as its central role in the building of cobblestone houses.

After the break, the show details the planned events and activities Wayne County will undertake to mark its bicentennial. Some of these elements have already begun. Regardless of their state, all point to the date of April 11, 2023, when a special birthday party is planned. Bavis and Fox reveal exactly what will happen and how you can learn more.
