The Dutch Golden Touch Echoes Into Greater Western New York

While the Dutch settlements may have seemed far from Greater Western New York, their impact on the region echoes through today. What role did they plan in the development of our region? Click the link below for this week’s episode of The State of Greater Western New York Report and discover why there’s a little bit of Dutch inside all of us.

How did the Dutch Republic go from non-existence to the world’s leading mercantile power in less than a generation? Christopher Carosa, Deputy Historian for the Town of Mendon, NY, begins the show by exploring the history of this fast-rising European power and what led it to establish settlements in the New World.

In the second half of the show, Carosa dives into the establishment of “New Netherland” and, in particular, the success it had in the upper Hudson River. He then explains their legacy both in terms of their influence on the Five Nations as well as the patroon system they left to the British upon their departure.

Our guest happily answered questions from the live audience. In fact, these are probably some of the same questions you had.
